Alleged Lack of Motorable Road Claims Infant’s Life in Domkyrka Village

Local reports stated that no vehicles could reach the area to transport the ailing child to a healthcare facility.

NONGSTOIN: A harrowing video circulating on social media since October 1, 2026, has brought to light a devastating tragedy in Domkyrka village, situated under the Rambrai Jyrngam Constituency, where the lack of basic road connectivity has allegedly claimed the life of a young child.

The heartbreaking incident has sparked widespread outrage among citizens, highlighting the dire consequences of neglected rural infrastructure in the region.

According to local reports, the infant fell critically ill, prompting his family to seek immediate medical intervention.

However, due to the absence of motorable roads leading to their remote village, no vehicles could reach the area to transport the ailing child to a healthcare facility.

Driven by desperation on the morning of October 1, the family made the agonizing decision to carry the critically ill infant on foot from Domkyrka. They embarked on an arduous three-hour trek toward Mawdet, where an emergency vehicle was arranged to meet them and transfer the child to the hospital.

Tragically, the long and grueling journey through rugged terrain proved too delay-ridden for the suffering child, who passed away halfway through the trek before reaching the waiting transport.

When questioned about the incident, Development Commissioner and Principal Secretary of Meghalaya, Sampath Kumar, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy.

He stated that it was very sad to see what had happened and confirmed that he would ask the Medical Officer concerned to understand how this could have been prevented.

He further noted that there are existing support systems at the community level, such as ASHA workers equipped with basic medication, intended to address critical cases like pneumonia directly at the village level.
