KSU Exposes Alleged Police Extortion Racket on National Highway

KSU further warned that such corruption directly contributes to rising prices of essential commodities, harming the local economy.

SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has uncovered what it claims is an organized extortion racket operated by Meghalaya Police on the National Highway through Mawkhanu and Thangshalai.

Following public complaints, a KSU Central Executive Committee team, led by Education Secretary Alerick Kharjana, conducted a surprise inspection on September 30 and collected video evidence of police officers allegedly collecting ₹200–₹500 from each passing goods, minerals, and food truck.

The KSU suspects the extortion operation is backed by senior officials, questioning how such practices could occur without high-level involvement.

The union raised serious allegations against East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem and District Magistrate Abhilash Baranwal, IAS, and demanded to know who authorized the illegal collections.

KSU further warned that such corruption directly contributes to rising prices of essential commodities, harming the local economy.

Demanding an immediate independent inquiry, the KSU called for the removal of SP Syiem and DC Baranwal and pledged to lodge an official complaint with authorities.

The union vowed to continue surprise inspections and to expose any illegal acts by law enforcement or government officials.
