UMSNING: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) North Khasi Hills District Unit, through its Organising Committee led by Organising Secretary Samla Jester Nongbet, successfully laid a trap in Umsning early this morning.
The operation resulted in the seizure of a private vehicle being used to smuggle illicit drugs, which was also found to be operating with fake registration number plates.
According to reports, the union had received reliable prior information about a private vehicle involved in drug smuggling. To evade law enforcement, the smugglers had fitted the vehicle with fake or mismatched out-of-state registration plates.
During the interception, it was discovered that the operation involved a conspiracy between individuals from outside the state and some local Khasi youths, who were acting as carriers and suppliers to distribute the drugs within the state.
After maintaining a prolonged vigil, KSU NKHD members intercepted the vehicle and apprehended those involved in the drug-running syndicate. The union alleges that Umsning and the greater Ri-Bhoi district have been used as transit routes for transporting drugs to other destinations.
Following the interception and a preliminary inquiry, the KSU handed over the apprehended individuals, the seized vehicle, and the contraband to the Umsning Police Station.
The union has urged law enforcement authorities to take the strictest possible legal action against those responsible, emphasizing the need to protect local youth and the fabric of society.
