SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Laban Circle has expressed grave concern over the worsening safety situation in and around the Kiang Nangbah statue area, citing increasing insecurity among commuters and pedestrians.
KSU Laban Circle president Jason Laloo stated that the situation has deteriorated due to the frequent gathering of individuals undergoing drug detoxification, who reportedly loiter in the area after visiting Civil Hospital, Shillong, creating fear and discomfort among the public.
A delegation of the KSU Laban Circle, led by Laloo, met the Surgeon Superintendent of Civil Hospital, Shillong, and formally submitted complaints received from residents and the general public. The delegation highlighted that the area is no longer perceived as safe for routine movement.
Laloo said that individuals visiting the hospital for detoxification have turned pedestrian pathways into loitering zones. He added that the union has been receiving complaints for several months. Although roadside vendors were relocated from footpaths to reduce congestion, the problem has persisted, with groups continuing to congregate in the area and adversely affecting the surrounding environment.
He further alleged that in recent months, an elderly man was robbed by a woman along with a group of youths. The group reportedly restrained the victim and attempted to extort money, threatening him with false accusations if he failed to comply.
While acknowledging that some individuals genuinely seek recovery, Laloo alleged that others are exploiting the situation by using the area as a meeting point to plan and engage in drug-related activities.
The union stated that it has urged hospital authorities to instruct patients receiving medication not to loiter along pedestrian pathways after completing their treatment, particularly near the Kiang Nongbah statue.
The KSU Laban Circle also issued a warning, stating that public spaces should not be used as hangout spots or for drug trade or other illegal activities. It cautioned that failure to comply would compel the union to take stringent measures and seek legal recourse.
