SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) East Jaintia Hills Unit has reiterated its opposition to Shree Cement Limited’s proposed limestone mining and cement plant project at Daistong Elaka Nongkhlieh, ahead of the scheduled public hearing on July 31.
After a meeting with Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board Member Secretary George Hagi Chyrmang on Tuesday, KSU East Jaintia Hills Unit President Streamley Suchen stated that the union will continue to stand with affected villagers, farmers, and landowners in resisting the project.
The union also voiced concerns over the decision to hold the public hearing at 8 am, rather than the usual 10 am, alleging that this change has sparked suspicion among local residents.

KSU claimed that the objections of affected communities have not been adequately addressed, despite strong public opposition.
Suchen highlighted fears among residents that the project will negatively impact agricultural land, forests, water sources, and traditional livelihoods.
He further questioned the tangible benefits local communities have received from existing cement industries in East Jaintia Hills, alleging that companies have prospered while villagers continue to face environmental and social challenges.
The KSU urged the district administration to ensure that every affected resident has the opportunity to participate in the public hearing and freely express their concerns.
