SHILLONG: Laitumkhrah, one of Shillong’s busiest and most prominent localities, is set for a major transformation as East Shillong MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh announced a comprehensive plan to address chronic traffic congestion and overcrowded pavements caused by unregulated street vending.
The announcement has generated optimism among residents, students, and daily commuters who have long struggled with gridlock and shrinking pedestrian space. Speaking to the press, Lyngdoh said the government, in coordination with concerned departments, is now ready to implement a permanent and structured solution.
“This is not just about clearing streets; it is about restoring order and dignity to Laitumkhrah through proper urban planning,” she said.
According to the MLA, the initiative will move forward with full legal backing and stakeholder participation to ensure a smooth transition. Key components of the plan include:
-
Judicial Direction: The High Court has issued clear instructions to the Town Vending Committee (TVC) to address the issue in a systematic and lawful manner, avoiding any confusion or disorder.
-
Collaborative Planning: The MLA is working closely with the Laitumkhrah Pyllun Dorbar Shnong, Seng Samla, and the CEO of the Vending Committee to identify suitable relocation sites for vendors.
-
Human-Centric Approach: Emphasising compassion, Lyngdoh assured that no force would be used.
“We don’t want to hurt anyone. Laitumkhrah is a place of enlightenment and must respect the rights of all citizens,” she said.
The long-term vision, the MLA said, is to restore Laitumkhrah’s identity as a clean, organised, and pedestrian-friendly urban hub. The plan focuses on three key pillars:
-
Pedestrian Priority: Reclaiming footpaths exclusively for pedestrians to ensure safe movement for students, office-goers, and senior citizens.
-
Planned Parking: Creation of designated parking zones to end the prevailing “gridlock culture.”
-
Decongested Roads: Improving road space to allow smoother vehicular movement and reduce daily traffic jams.
“The dream is to see a spacious Laitumkhrah once again—with proper parking and freedom from excessive traffic,” Lyngdoh said.
With all stakeholders now working in coordination, there is renewed hope that Laitumkhrah will soon shed its congested image and emerge as a model for urban management in Shillong.
