Is P.N. Syiem Jumping Ship to BJP?

PN Syiem is reportedly eyeing a comeback in Mawsynram, his former stronghold where he previously served as MLA.

SHILLONG: The political landscape of Meghalaya is bracing for a massive tremor as rumors intensify that Pynshngaiñ N Syiem, the Working President of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), is on the verge of ditching the Congress to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The Congress party, already battling to find its footing, appears to be in a state of high anxiety. Doubts began to swirl after Syiem—a heavyweight leader responsible for the entire Khasi-Jaintia Hills region—conspicuously stopped attending crucial party meetings.

A Leadership in Limbo?

MPCC President Vincent H Pala did not mince words when addressing the situation, expressing deep concern over Syiem’s sudden “disappearing act.”

Pala suggested that Syiem might be feeling disillusioned following his defeat in the MDC elections. With the Congress currently out of power, Pala hinted that the veteran leader might be looking for greener pastures to rescue his political career.

“We have nothing against Pynshngaiñ,” Pala stated. “He is a leader we still need. We appointed him as Working President to oversee the Khasi-Jaintia region. However, if he intends to restart his career with a party in power, that is his personal decision.”

Pala highlighted Syiem’s history of turbulent party shifts but emphasized his value, particularly his deep expertise in District Council rules and laws.

“The party needs him,” Pala added, “but at the end of the day, we cannot force him. It rests on his own wisdom.”

The fire of these rumors was stoked further by Meghalaya BJP President Rikman Momin, who recently teased that “big names” in state politics are set to join the saffron fold very soon.

Pynshngaiñ N. Syiem is allegedly the “big name” in question.

Syiem is reportedly eyeing a comeback in Mawsynram, his former stronghold where he previously served as MLA.

If this move materializes, it would be a devastating blow to the Congress’s influence in the Khasi Hills and a massive strategic win for the BJP as they look to expand their footprint in Meghalaya.
