SHILLONG: Leader of the Opposition and former Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma on Friday paid rich tribute to late Shillong Member of Parliament Dr Ricky A. J. Syngkon, describing him as a deeply committed leader whose life and work will continue to inspire generations.
Dr. Syngkon passed away on February 19 at Dr H Gordon Roberts’ Hospital, leaving behind a legacy of service, integrity, and dedication to the people of Meghalaya.
Speaking to the media, Dr. Mukul Sangma said that the grief was visible everywhere, with multitudes of supporters and well-wishers mourning the untimely loss of a promising leader.
“It is something very difficult to comprehend and accept as human beings. He was not only a leader for the state but for the entire region and the nation,” Sangma said.
He added that Dr. Syngkon’s strong faith gave hope and comfort to those grieving, and expressed confidence that he now rests “under the shadow of the Almighty.”
‘Politics Is the Toughest Profession’
Emphasising Dr. Syngkon’s courage in choosing public life, Sangma reflected on the challenges of politics and the late MP’s commitment to serving the people.
“Politics is definitely the toughest profession. It is full of seen and unseen challenges. It is like navigating through a rough and difficult terrain,” he said.
Sangma noted that despite coming from an academic background and having no political lineage or “godfather,” Dr. Syngkon chose to enter full-time politics out of a sense of calling and responsibility.
“When he accepted this call, it gave hope to the people. It showed that young leaders who are willing and committed can step forward and serve,” he remarked.
A Role Model for Young Leaders
The former Chief Minister highlighted that Dr. Syngkon’s journey was a powerful message for the younger generation, proving that politics is not limited to family legacies.
He said democracy provides space for capable individuals to rise through dedication and hard work, and Dr. Syngkon’s life stands as a testimony to that belief.
“His example will give faith and courage to young people who hesitate to enter politics. How you do things determines the outcome,” Sangma stated.
Remembering the late MP’s passion and resolve, Sangma said his service to protect the interests of the state was exemplary.
“With the commitment and passion with which he served the people, he will always remain in the hearts of multitudes,” he said.
Sangma prayed for eternal peace for Dr. Syngkon and strength for his family and supporters. “We pray that God comforts everyone who is mourning. As faithful, we believe we will meet him again,” he added.
