Massive Power Outage Hits Garo Hills, Jaintia Hills and Ri-Bhoi; Villages Plunged into Darkness

While Shillong city has witnessed relatively less damage, some areas continue to experience intermittent disruptions.

SHILLONG: A powerful cyclonic storm accompanied by heavy rainfall has caused widespread destruction across Meghalaya, crippling the state’s electricity distribution network and plunging several villages into darkness.

Power Minister Metbah Lyngdoh, addressing the media, described the situation as severe, with extensive damage reported across multiple districts. The worst-affected regions include Nongstoin, Ri-Bhoi, Jaintia Hills, and parts of Garo Hills.

The Minister outlined the key reasons behind the prolonged power outages. According to him, large trees uprooted by strong winds have collapsed onto high-tension power lines. He added that several faults have occurred in remote, mountainous areas, making repair work challenging.

He also said that maintenance teams are struggling to reach affected locations due to blocked roads, debris, and steep terrain.

“In many areas located in rugged terrain, it may take two to three days to fully restore power supply,” Lyngdoh said. “The combination of steep cliffs and fallen trees on electric lines makes immediate repairs extremely difficult.”

While Shillong city has witnessed relatively less damage, some areas continue to experience intermittent disruptions. Repair teams are actively clearing debris and fixing damaged transformers in urban pockets.

However, the situation remains critical in rural and interior regions, where restoration efforts are slower and more labour-intensive. In many cases, workers are required to manually replace electric poles and restring wires across dense forests and deep gorges.

The Power Department has deployed teams across affected districts and has already restored supply in areas with minor damage. Efforts are ongoing to bring back electricity in severely impacted zones.

Appealing for public cooperation, the Minister urged residents to remain patient as restoration work continues under challenging conditions.
