SHILLONG: Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Wednesday said that a meeting was held on Tuesday to discuss the situation in Lapangap, with senior officials from the Assam government and representatives from Meghalaya participating in the deliberations.
Addressing the media, Tynsong said the Meghalaya delegation was led by Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, while senior Assam government officials were also present. The meeting was attended by the headmen from both sides, including representatives from Meghalaya and the Karbi Anglong region.
He said both sides reached a clear understanding and agreed to ensure that cultivation activities in the area are not disrupted under any circumstances.
“The decision taken yesterday was to ensure that farming and cultivation activities continue without interruption,” Tynsong said.
He further noted that authorities from both state governments, along with district council officials, assured that they would safeguard the livelihood activities of residents from villages on both sides of the border.
According to the Deputy Chief Minister, all stakeholders agreed to maintain peace, harmony and a cordial atmosphere in the area so that residents can continue their daily activities without fear or hindrance.
Tynsong emphasized that the commitment to preserving cordial relations should not be limited to a short period but must continue in the long term to ensure lasting peace and cooperation between the communities of the two states.
On the Meghalaya-Assam border talks, Tynsong said discussions on the remaining areas of difference between the two states will resume once the cabinet expansion in Assam is completed.
He stated that both governments remain committed to continuing the border talks aimed at resolving the pending issues between the neighbouring states.
“The issue of the pending differences between Meghalaya and Assam remains on the agenda. However, we are currently awaiting the expansion of the Assam cabinet,” he said.
According to Tynsong, Assam Chief Minister has expressed his willingness to continue joint inspections and discussions in the remaining disputed areas. However, he requested the Meghalaya government to wait until the cabinet expansion is completed so that the ministers entrusted with the respective regions can participate in the process.
Tynsong said the Meghalaya government remains committed to resolving the remaining border disputes with Assam through dialogue, mutual cooperation and continued engagement between the two states.
