SHILLONG: Athletes from the Kudo Association Meghalaya have brought laurels to the state after securing multiple medals at the 16th Kudo National Tournament 2025–2026, the 6th Kudo Federation Cup, and the Akshay Kumar 17th International Kudo Tournament 2025–2026, all held recently in Surat, Gujarat.
The association had initially selected 20 male and female athletes to represent Meghalaya. However, due to a lack of financial support and sponsorship, five participants were unable to make the trip. Despite the setback, 15 athletes competed and delivered an impressive performance, winning several medals.
Among the medalists, Ferdinand Nongdhar bagged one gold and one silver medal, while Ibalakordor Umdor secured three bronze medals. Larisha Nongphlang, Damonlang Myrboh, Alfred Papeng, and Ribhalin Marbaniang each won one bronze medal, and Pynchemlutimi Suchiang clinched one silver and one bronze medal.
Speaking to reporters, Kudo Association Meghalaya President Pynshai Mawrie said the team had made every effort to send the athletes to participate despite limited resources. He informed that the association has written to the state government seeking official recognition so that young athletes can receive financial assistance when representing Meghalaya outside the state.
Mawrie further highlighted that many of the trainees come from financially weaker families, with parents often taking loans to ensure their children can compete and bring pride to the state.
The medal-winning athletes expressed their gratitude to supporters and sponsors who helped them participate, adding that the experience gained from these tournaments has boosted their confidence. They expressed hope of securing even more gold, silver, and bronze medals in future competitions.
