Meghalaya Boosts War on Drugs: High-Tech Advanced Scanner Vehicle to be Deployed at Ratacherra

This dual-layered approach—tech and talent—is expected to significantly cripple the supply chain of illegal drugs entering the state.

SHILLONG: In a major breakthrough for state security, the Government of Meghalaya is set to revolutionize its fight against narcotics.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has officially sanctioned the procurement of a cutting-edge Advanced Scanner Vehicle, marking the first time the state will deploy high-level technology to intercept drug trafficking at its borders.

The scanner will be stationed at Ratacherra, a critical entry point and a known high-risk transit route for illegal substances.

Speaking on the development, Paul Lyngdoh, Adviser to the Social Welfare Department, highlighted that this move is a decisive step toward “plugging the holes” in the state’s borders.

“Every vehicle entering Meghalaya through this route will now undergo rigorous scanning. We are leveraging the power of technology to ensure that drugs have no way of slipping through,” Lyngdoh stated.

The scanner is expected to be operational by March 2024, fitting within the current financial year. The choice of Ratacherra is strategic; it serves as a primary gateway for narcotics flowing from the Golden Triangle and Myanmar through neighboring regions.

The “K9” Reinforcements

Technology isn’t the only upgrade coming to the frontline. For the first time, Meghalaya is introducing a specialized Sniffer Dog Squad to assist law enforcement.

A dedicated K9 squad has completed intensive training.

These dogs are experts at tracking and sniffing out hidden stashes that might evade manual searches.

The dogs will work alongside the new scanner vehicle to create a formidable “double-check” system.

For years, traffickers have used sophisticated concealment methods to transport drugs across state lines. By combining advanced X-ray/scanning technology with the instincts of a K9 squad, the Meghalaya government is signaling a “zero-tolerance” policy.

This dual-layered approach—tech and talent—is expected to significantly cripple the supply chain of illegal drugs entering the state, protecting the youth and the future of Meghalaya.
