Meghalaya Cracks Down on Illegal Bike Taxis, Operators Asked to Register Under New Rules

To transition into a legal business model, the Commissioner advised interested individuals to visit their nearest DTO office

SHILLONG: The Transport Department of Meghalaya has issued a strict warning against the illegal operation of two-wheeler taxis in the state capital, while simultaneously urging local entrepreneurs to regularize their businesses under newly established government frameworks.

Commissioner of Transport Sanjay Goyal stated that the department has already taken stringent enforcement action against unauthorized bike taxi operators, including shutting down their primary places of operation a long time ago. Despite these measures, some operators continue to ply illegally.

Goyal requested the public to come forward and report any such unauthorized operations to the authorities.

He emphasized that aggregators and individual operators must fulfill all legal requirements before hitting the road, noting that District Transport Officers (DTOs) have been given explicit instructions to take strict legal action against violators.

To facilitate organized transport services, the Commissioner highlighted that the state cabinet has already passed and notified the Bike Aggregator rules.

Additionally, the government has introduced a separate category of regulations known as the “rent-a-bike” and “rent-a-taxi” rules.

These specific guidelines cater primarily to tourists and visitors from outside the state who prefer to rent and drive two-wheelers or vehicles independently during their stay.

Goyal suggested that the continued illegal operations might stem from a lack of public awareness regarding these official government facilitations.

He urged aspiring entrepreneurs and current operators to take advantage of the newly notified rules rather than operating outside the law.

To transition into a legal business model, the Commissioner advised interested individuals to visit their nearest DTO office, complete the formal registration process, and secure the necessary licenses before resuming operations.
