Meghalaya Govt Appeals to Traders to File FIRs Over HNLC Extortion Demands

Dy CM stressed that success in these efforts depends heavily on the cooperation of the public in sharing information fearlessly with authorities.

SHILLONG: Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Home Affairs, Prestone Tynsong, on Thursday made a strong appeal to the business community and citizens at large not to succumb to fear following reports of extortion demands from the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC). He urged all those who have received such demands to come forward and file First Information Reports (FIRs) without hesitation.

The Deputy Chief Minister’s statement follows recent reports that several high-profile businessmen in the state have been receiving extortion notices via WhatsApp from the banned outfit. Tynsong confirmed that the state government is in receipt of reports regarding these activities and has recently conducted a thorough review of the situation.

Addressing the issue, Tynsong requested recipients of these messages not to conceal such incidents. He urged them to immediately inform the local police, police outposts, or the office of the Superintendent of Police (SP) in their respective districts. He even extended an invitation for individuals to inform him directly, ensuring that the government can track and apprehend those responsible.

The Home Minister emphasized that the government’s primary goal is to provide a secure environment where traders and businessmen can operate peacefully and without intimidation.

When questioned about the possibility of the government taking Suo Moto action (action initiated by the court or authority on its own), Tynsong clarified that while it is an option, the primary challenge remains the delay in reporting.

He noted that victims often wait two to three weeks before informing the authorities, and by then, the information has already leaked to the public. He called on the business community to be prompt in bringing such matters to the attention of the police to enable swift and stringent legal action.

Reassuring the public, the Deputy Chief Minister stated that citizens have no reason to be afraid as the government is committed to their protection. He asserted that whether it is the HNLC, common thieves, or other criminal elements, the state will take firm action and impose severe punishment.

However, he stressed that success in these efforts depends heavily on the cooperation of the public in sharing information fearlessly with the authorities.
