Aadhaar Not Mandatory but Crucial for Welfare Access, Says Dy CM Prestone Tynsong

He described Aadhaar as an essential tool in the modern administrative framework for ensuring the proper delivery of benefits.

SHILLONG: The Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Prestone Tynsong, has reaffirmed the state government’s ongoing efforts to conduct public awareness campaigns regarding the importance of Aadhaar enrollment.

Addressing the media, Tynsong emphasized that while the government continues to encourage citizens to undergo the biometric process, it remains a voluntary choice and the administration cannot force those who are unwilling to participate.

The Deputy Chief Minister pointed out that in the current digital age, certain groups and individuals are spreading misinformation among the public concerning the High Court’s ruling on Aadhaar. He clarified that such misinformation is unlawful, noting that the High Court has issued a clear directive stating that without Aadhaar, citizens will be unable to access various benefits and welfare schemes provided by both the Central and State governments.

Tynsong reiterated that the decision to enroll ultimately rests with the individual; however, he issued a firm cautionary note. He warned that if people choose to reject Aadhaar, they should not complain later if they lose out on their rights or government assistance, as the government will be unable to facilitate these services. He described Aadhaar as an essential tool in the modern administrative framework for ensuring the proper delivery of benefits.

This statement from the Deputy Chief Minister follows a recent public meeting organized by a group known as the Awakening India Movement. The group expressed strong opposition to the biometric system, claiming that many residents have been deprived of their fundamental rights and entitlements due to a lack of an Aadhaar card.

While the group demands a move away from the system, the government maintains its stance, adhering to judicial rulings that highlight the necessity of the document for government-related procedures and the distribution of schemes.
