SHILLONG: Meghalaya Law Minister Lahkmen Rymbui announced that the State Government has requested Advocate General Amit Kumar to refrain from appearing in court for the next two weeks while it reviews grievances raised by the legal fraternity.
The move follows high-level talks with the High Court of Meghalaya Bar Association and the Shillong Bar Association, amid ongoing protests demanding the Advocate General’s removal.
Rymbui thanked bar association leaders for their participation, stressing that the meeting was cordial and constructive.
He clarified that while the Law Department will address operational concerns, the removal of the Advocate General—a constitutional position—must be considered at the cabinet level.

The government, he said, needs time to thoroughly examine allegations and determine appropriate responses.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong appealed to lawyers to cooperate and withdraw their ongoing court boycott, emphasizing that complex issues require dialogue, not confrontation.
Bar associations agreed to convey the government’s proposal—including the two-week stand-down for the Advocate General—to their members and will make a final decision on the strike after further consultation.
Both sides are scheduled to reconvene next week for continued discussions.
