SHILLONG: The Information Technology and Communication Department on Wednesday felicitated meritorious students who excelled in the SSLC and HSSLC examinations conducted by various boards, at a programme held at the U SoSo Tham Auditorium in Shillong.
The event was attended by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, along with government officials, parents, and students.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister congratulated the awardees, stating that their achievements reflect exceptional dedication and perseverance. He remarked that while many aspire to reach such milestones, only a few succeed, and the occasion serves to recognise and celebrate their hard work.
Highlighting the effort behind their success, he noted that the students’ sacrifices, discipline, and focus—despite numerous challenges—had ultimately paid off. He expressed pride in their accomplishments on behalf of the State Government.
Referring to the laptops distributed during the programme, Sangma said the devices symbolise more than material value, representing recognition, encouragement, and confidence in the students’ potential. He added that the honour truly belongs to the students, who deserve to be applauded for their achievements.
On the evolving global landscape, the Chief Minister pointed out that rapid technological advancements are reshaping opportunities. While developments such as layoffs in the IT sector may appear concerning, they also open new avenues for innovation and growth.
Citing developments within the State, he highlighted the progress of the Shillong IT Park, which is attracting companies working in advanced domains such as artificial intelligence and enterprise systems. He noted that local talent is increasingly contributing to global technological solutions, demonstrating that opportunities can be accessed from within Meghalaya.
Reflecting on his personal journey, Sangma shared that despite aspirations to venture into business after graduating from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, he faced challenges due to the absence of a supportive ecosystem at the time. He said these experiences have shaped the Government’s focus on promoting entrepreneurship, innovation, and skill development.
He further underscored emerging opportunities across sectors such as technology, administration, sports, music, and clean energy, noting that initiatives like ethanol production are opening new avenues for enterprise.
Encouraging students to contribute to the State’s growth, he said that while many may seek opportunities outside, Meghalaya holds immense potential for those willing to build their future within it. He also urged students to follow their passion and remain grounded, emphasising that humility is key to sustained success.
Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, in his address, highlighted the growing importance of digital technology in education and everyday life. He stressed that the digital space has become integral to modern living and reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to equipping students with the necessary tools and skills.
Describing the laptops distributed under the initiative as gateways to the digital world, Rymbui said they would enable students to learn, explore, and prepare for future challenges. He added that the Government has expanded support through various schemes, including scholarship programmes, with significant allocations to benefit students across the State.
The Minister also spoke about the Community Integrated Skills Learning programme, aimed at building competencies from the elementary level, and emphasised the need to adapt to rapid technological advancements such as artificial intelligence.
Expressing concern over the declining number of candidates from the State qualifying in the civil services examination, he encouraged students to strive for excellence and serve the nation with distinction.
Earlier, Joint Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, Information Technology and Communications Department, K. L. Nongbri delivered the welcome address. He informed that the Meghalaya IT Awards, instituted in 2007, aim to recognise academic excellence and promote interest in information technology through the distribution of laptops.
A total of 203 meritorious students from Classes 10 and 12 were honoured this year, including 131 from MBOSE, 51 from CBSE, and 21 from ICSE. Among the awardees were also two specially-abled students.
Student representative Leisha Agarwal from St Margaret’s Higher Secondary School, who topped the 2025 MBOSE SSLC examination, expressed gratitude to the department and the State Government for recognising her achievement, describing the award as both an honour and an encouragement.
