SHILLONG: Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) President, Lambokstarwell Marngar, has expressed grave concern over the rising tide of illegal immigration and unauthorized settlement of outsiders in Shillong.
Speaking on the issue, Marngar alleged that Meghalaya is no longer a “free state” in the sense of liberty, but has instead become a “free-for-all” due to the absence of stringent laws to check the massive influx of migrants.
The KSU chief took aim at the state government’s claims regarding the implementation of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA). While the government maintains the Act is in force, Marngar pointed out a glaring lack of infrastructure on the ground.
“Under the MRSSA, there should be 18 Entry/Exit points across the Khasi Hills for screening, but we see nothing today,” Marngar stated.
He questioned the government’s sincerity, asking, “If the government truly intends to protect us, why is there no visible action on the ground?”
Turning his attention to the Inner Line Permit (ILP) resolution passed by the State Assembly in 2019, the KSU President warned the Central Government against further delays. He demanded that New Delhi provide a clear answer on whether it intends to grant ILP to the state.
He further urged the state government to stop making “vague statements” and instead exert real pressure on the Centre to secure the rights of the indigenous people.
Citing government apathy, Marngar announced that the KSU would not allow outsiders to settle illegally in Meghalaya. He confirmed that the union will intensify its own verification drives across the state, noting that they have already intercepted numerous individuals lacking valid documentation in recent days.
“If there were strict laws in place, I do not believe anyone would dare to enter our state illegally,” said Marngar.
Marngar reminded elected representatives that they were chosen by the people to craft laws that protect the community, not merely to occupy government seats.
He condemned successive governments since statehood for failing to take the issue of illegal immigration seriously, warning of a bleak future if the administration continues to “remain asleep.”
