Meghalaya Muster Roll Union Seeks Retrospective Benefits

The union emphasized that these policy overhauls are vital for protecting livelihoods and ensuring the welfare of muster roll workers.

SHILLONG: The All Jaintia Muster Roll Workers and Labour Union (CEC) has welcomed the Meghalaya Cabinet’s decision to raise the retirement age for muster roll workers from 58 to 60 years, but is demanding that this change be applied retrospectively from September 25, 2025.

Union leaders Khroo L. Pariat and D. Iakai urged the government to reinstate workers forced into early retirement after a previous order capped the age at 65, allowing them to serve until the new threshold.

Beyond retirement age reforms, the union is pressing for broader changes, including:

Immediate implementation of the Employees’ Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952, for eligible laborers.
Creation of dedicated Muster Roll Workers Welfare Boards in all technical and field departments, modeled after the Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board.
Transfer of administrative oversight for muster roll workers from the Personnel and AR (B) Department to the Labour Department for more efficient management and welfare delivery.

The union emphasized that these policy overhauls are vital for protecting livelihoods and ensuring the welfare of thousands of muster roll workers across Meghalaya.
