SHILLONG: The Bharatiya Janata Party in Meghalaya has decided to contest the upcoming Shillong Parliamentary by-election and will shortly forward its recommendation to the party’s central leadership for approval.
Addressing reporters on Monday, BJP spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang said senior leaders of the party have already resolved to field a candidate for the seat.
On speculation surrounding Cabinet Minister Sanbor Shullai as a possible nominee, Kharkrang said Shullai would be a strong contender if he agrees to contest. He also disclosed that around nine aspirants have applied for the BJP ticket.
The party further ruled out the possibility of a common candidate from the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA), saying no discussions had been held among coalition partners and that each constituent party is expected to field its own nominee.
Commenting on the June 18 election to the lone Rajya Sabha seat, Kharkrang said the BJP has not yet taken a final decision. However, he indicated that the party may back a consensus MDA candidate, given its limited numerical strength in the Assembly.
He also clarified that the BJP would not support any candidate backed by the opposition for the Rajya Sabha election.
