SHILLONG: Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Tuesday provided a detailed update on Meghalaya’s internal security situation and border stability, addressing the recent standoff in Maikhuli, Ri-Bhoi district, and the violence in Rajabala, which claimed the life of an ACHIK member.
Tynsong said the situation in Maikhuli, along the Meghalaya–Assam border, has been brought completely under control following days of tension over the installation of electric poles.
The standoff, which involved residents from both states, was triggered by a misunderstanding, he said. The Deputy Chief Minister credited the resolution to timely intervention by the Regional Committees and coordinated efforts between district administrations.
“There was initial resistance from the Assam side regarding the installation of post lights. However, after a meeting between the Deputy Commissioners of Ri-Bhoi and Kamrup, the issue has been resolved. A Peace Committee has been formed and the electrification work has resumed,” Tynsong said.
Addressing the incident in Rajabala, which led to the death of an ACHIK member and subsequent unrest, Tynsong said normalcy has been restored in the area.
He confirmed that Peace Committees, under the direction of the Deputy Commissioner, have been constituted to ensure long-term peace, and that more than six persons have been arrested in connection with the mob violence.
Warning that no one involved would be spared, Tynsong said those responsible would face strict legal action.
“The law will take its own course. Those found guilty of this heinous act will face the full weight of the legal system,” he said.
GHADC Elections to Be Held on Time
Putting to rest speculation over a possible delay in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections, the Deputy Chief Minister said the government has no intention of postponing the polls.
He noted that the current GHADC term ends on April 18, and stressed that the election process must be completed before the expiry of the term.
“The Cabinet will meet shortly to finalise the schedule. Once the decision is taken, the election dates will be officially announced,” Tynsong said.
