Meghalaya Student Wins Jury Award at NE Science Fair 2026 for Smart LPG Safety System

James’ achievement underscores the importance of youth-led solutions addressing everyday safety challenges.

SHILLONG: In a proud moment for Meghalaya, James Donald Kharkongor, a young innovator from the Innovation Hub at Shillong Science Centre, has won the prestigious Jury Award at the North East Science Fair & Innovation Festival 2026, organised by the National Science Centre.

James, a Class XI student of Mawngap District Christian Multipurpose Higher Secondary School and a resident of Laitpynter Synrangkaban, earned recognition for his innovative project titled “Smart LPG Safety and Hazard Prevention System.”

Developed under the mentorship of the Shillong Science Centre, the project is designed to detect leakage of combustible gases such as LPG and automatically activate preventive safety measures. The system integrates advanced gas sensors with an instant alarm mechanism, an automated exhaust fan to disperse accumulated gas, and IoT-based alerts for real-time remote monitoring.

The Jury commended the innovation for its practical relevance, technical integration, and strong potential to enhance household safety—particularly in rural and semi-urban areas where gas leak accidents remain a serious concern.

James’ achievement not only highlights the growing culture of scientific innovation in Meghalaya but also underscores the importance of youth-led solutions addressing everyday safety challenges.
