The appointment was announced through a notification issued on February 17, 2026, by the Government of India.

SHILLONG: In a major milestone for Meghalaya, Jim R. Marwein has been appointed to the prestigious Indian Administrative Service (IAS). The appointment was announced through a notification issued on February 17, 2026, by the Government of India, under the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, in New Delhi.

Speaking about his achievement, Marwein said that the Government of Meghalaya had invited eligible officers to apply for induction into the IAS. From a large pool of applicants, only five officers were shortlisted by the state government for the interview conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).

The shortlisted candidates included the Director of Commerce and Industries, Joint Secretary (Law), Director of Finance and Accounts, an officer from the Finance Department, and Marwein, who was serving as Additional Director of Survey.

Out of these candidates, Marwein emerged successful, marking a significant achievement for the state. His induction into the IAS is being widely seen as a source of motivation for young people in Meghalaya who aspire to clear competitive examinations and join India’s top civil services.

Sources said the appointment has brought special pride to West Khasi Hills. Following the bifurcation of the district into South West Khasi Hills and Eastern West Khasi Hills, Marwein is the first person from the region to be elevated to the IAS.

According to the official notification, the appointment has been made under the provisions of the IAS Recruitment Rules, 1954, and the IAS (Appointment by Selection) Regulations, 1997. He has been selected from the Non-State Civil Service category under the Select List of 2024, prepared for vacancies arising between January 1 and December 31, 2024.
