Minister Rymbui Declares People’s Voice Must Lead Railway Debate

Minister Rymbui reaffirmed that the sanctity of local villages will not be compromised for the sake of progress.

SHILLONG: Cabinet Minister Lahkmen Rymbui has asserted that while modern infrastructure is a catalyst for economic growth, the will of the people remains the ultimate authority.

Rymbui acknowledged that robust infrastructure—whether through roads, railways, waterways, or airways—is the fundamental backbone for any region’s prosperity. He highlighted that the NDA Government’s long-standing policy to connect all state capitals via rail and air is a strategic vision nearly 25 years in the making.

However, the veteran leader pointed out that Meghalaya’s situation is distinct from the rest of India. He voiced the deep-seated concerns of the indigenous community, stating:

“Meghalaya is different. As a minority community, there is a very real and genuine fear of being overwhelmed by an influx of outsiders.”

The Power of the ‘People’s Voice’

Addressing the intense public protests that have stalled railway projects in recent years, Rymbui emphasized that the State Government has a solemn duty to listen to its citizens. Because Meghalaya falls under the Sixth Schedule, he noted that any developmental step must align strictly with the aspirations and safety of the local population.

In a move to reassure the public,  Rymbui highly commended the Dorbar Shnong and Dorbar Raid across the Khasi-Jaintia Hills. He credited these traditional institutions for their “strength and vigilance” in monitoring settlers and preventing illegal immigration.

“We are still able to control the influx because our local authorities are alert,” he said, reaffirming that the sanctity of local villages will not be compromised for the sake of progress.
