SHILLONG: The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) expansion in Meghalaya received a major boost as former Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) Chief Executive Member Moonlight Pariat officially joined the party, strengthening the BJP’s grassroots network ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections.
Pariat, a six-time MDC from Jowai South with 27 years of council experience, was inducted by State BJP President Rikman G. Momin in the presence of cabinet ministers A.L. Hek and Sanbor Shullai, State Spokesperson M. Kharkrang, and former legislators Mohendro Rapsang and Jemino Mawthoh.
Pariat, previously aligned with the NPP-led JHADC coalition and a former UDP Assembly candidate, brings significant political experience to the BJP.

His induction follows last month’s dramatic defection of eight UDP MLAs to the BJP, making it the second-largest party in the 60-member Assembly with 10 seats.
BJP leaders hailed Pariat’s entry as a sign of growing public trust and called on party workers to expand grassroots outreach in preparation for 2028.
Party insiders indicated that additional defections from former legislators and district council members are expected as the BJP consolidates its position across Meghalaya.
