SHILLONG: The Joint Action Committee Muster Roll Workers Union (JACMRWU) has announced a state-wide protest scheduled for April 9, following a general body meeting held at the Soso Tham Auditorium, State Central Library, on Tuesday. The meeting witnessed the participation of hundreds of workers.
The decision comes amid growing discontent among members of the All Meghalaya Muster Roll Progressive Workers Union (AMMRPWU), Shillong, and the All Jaintia Muster Roll Workers & Labour Union (AJMRWLU), Jowai, over what they describe as the state government’s continued neglect of their long-standing demands.
The JAC expressed disappointment that Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has not responded to the memorandum previously submitted by the union.
Workers alleged that Muster Roll and Casual employees are being retired without any retirement benefits or social security support.

The union demanded the immediate release of pending wages, stating that delays have pushed many workers into financial hardship.
Earlier in the day, the union also organised a peace march to highlight their grievances. The march began at the State Central Library, passed through All Saints, Barik, and Malki, and concluded at the Soso Tham Auditorium.
Despite the current term of the JAC set to end on March 31, 2026, union leaders have called upon all Muster Roll and Casual workers to unite for the upcoming protest. The venue for the April 9 demonstration will be announced shortly.
“Our strength lies in unity. This is a fight to protect our fundamental rights,” a senior JAC leader said.
During the meeting, the Committee’s Treasurer also presented a detailed financial report to ensure transparency and accountability within the organisation.
