Shillong, Nov 20: Nazareth Hospital continues to keep a close watch on the condition of NEHU MSc Chemistry students Stephanie Shadap (22) and Daritngen Ponduhkhei (20), who were seriously injured after being struck by a speeding vehicle near NEHU Gate-II on Monday evening.
Stephanie is showing signs of improvement, with doctors reporting her condition as stable. Her father, Niwell Dhar, said she is now conscious and able to eat, though she continues to suffer from spinal injuries and a blood clot in her brain. Doctors are expected to soon decide if surgery will be required. Dhar expressed gratitude that she has moved past the most severe complications.

Meanwhile, Daritngen remains in critical condition. Her uncle, Phlening Khongthaw, said there has been no clear sign of improvement so far. She has sustained multiple fractures to her jaw, limbs, and waist, and is expected to undergo prolonged treatment. Although shifting her to Guwahati was initially suggested, doctors are reconsidering the plan due to her unstable condition and may bring specialists from Guwahati to Shillong instead.
Both families expressed full confidence in the medical staff at Nazareth Hospital. They also thanked the state government for its commitment to cover medical expenses, the police for quickly arresting the driver involved in the incident, and all those who donated blood for the two students.
