SHILLONG: In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to strengthen employment opportunities across the nation, the Government of India today organized the Rozgar Mela to distribute appointment letters to newly recruited personnel in various departments.
In the North East region, the event was held in Shillong, where Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita attended the occasion as the Chief Guest. He distributed appointment letters to the new recruits and lauded the enthusiasm of the youth in the region.
Margherita said that the Rozgar Mela embodies the Prime Minister’s determination to empower India’s youth. He noted that since its launch on October 27, 2022, the initiative has transformed India’s employment landscape. Across 16 editions, over 10 lakh appointment letters have been distributed, and in this 17th edition, more than 51,000 candidates across the country—including those in Shillong—received their appointments.
Margherita also highlighted that a transformative employment and skill development initiative worth ₹2 lakh crore has been announced for the next five years. Drawing from his experience as Minister of State for External Affairs, he emphasized that the potential of Indian youth shines globally and reflected the same energy and promise among the new recruits.
Addressing the gathering through video conferencing, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to the new recruits and their families. He remarked that this year’s Diwali has brought “double the joy”—celebration of the festival and the happiness of securing permanent employment.
“These are not merely government jobs,” Modi said, “but opportunities to participate in nation-building.” He urged the appointees to work with sincerity and uphold the spirit of ‘Nagarik Devo Bhava’—service to citizens as a sacred duty.
The Prime Minister noted that over 11 lakh appointment letters have been issued through Rozgar Melas to date. He also introduced the ‘PM Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana’, targeting employment for 3.5 crore youth, and pointed to initiatives such as the Skill India Mission and National Career Service, which have shared details of over 7 crore vacancies nationwide.
PM Modi also launched the ‘Pratibha Setu Portal’, designed to provide opportunities for candidates who reached the UPSC final stage but were not selected. He said the portal will connect such talented individuals with public and private sector opportunities, ensuring their potential is not lost.
PM Modi also highlighted the GST Bachat Utsav, noting that recent GST reforms have not only reduced prices for consumers but also expanded employment through increased production and demand. Record sales during Dhanteras and Diwali, he said, are evidence of a vibrant and growing economy.
Underscoring the global dimension of India’s youth empowerment, the Prime Minister said that India’s foreign engagements now include initiatives for training and employment generation. He cited partnerships with countries such as the UK, Brazil, Singapore, Korea, and Canada, which will open new job opportunities in sectors like AI, fintech, clean energy, and startups.
