SHILLONG: In an urgent bid to stabilise the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) amid a deepening administrative crisis, the Meghalaya Government has formally appealed to Prof S. Umdor to withdraw his resignation and resume charge as Pro-Vice Chancellor with immediate effect.

NEHU has been grappling with serious governance challenges since Prof. Umdor tendered his resignation on December 15, 2025. Although his resignation has not yet been formally accepted, the resulting leadership vacuum has triggered widespread concern within academic and administrative circles across the state.

Breaking the government’s silence on the matter, Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said the crisis has begun to affect not only NEHU but also its extensive academic network of over 70 affiliated colleges.

He noted that the ongoing administrative crisis has led to major disruptions, including — Examination delays, affecting thousands of students, stalled appointments and faculty promotions, creating a human resource deadlock and financial bottlenecks, impacting salary disbursements and key developmental projects

“I strongly urge Prof. S. Umdor to return to office. Technically, his resignation has not been processed, and his resumption of duties is essential to restore normal functioning at the university,” the Minister said.

The Education Minister further revealed that the issue has been escalated to the Union Ministry of Education, following intervention by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, as the state explores long-term solutions to the leadership impasse.

However, until a permanent arrangement is put in place, the state government believes Prof. Umdor’s return is critical to ensure institutional continuity and administrative stability.

Emphasising the broader implications of the crisis, the Minister stressed that prolonged uncertainty could severely impact students, faculty members, and the academic reputation of NEHU.

“For the sake of the students and the legacy of this premier institution, Prof. Umdor’s leadership is indispensable at this crucial juncture,” he added.
