The Joint Action Committee (JAC), comprising of NEHUTA, NEHUNSA and NEHUSU, will call for an indefinite strike from November 13 onwards in protest against the “adamant and non-responsive attitude” of the Vice Chancellor of the university.

The tug of war between the VC and JAC over several issues in the university has been going on for months, with claims and counter-claims being made by both parties.

While the VC PS Shukla has maintained that the decisions and actions taken by him is in line with the rules and norms of UGC and NEHU, JAC says otherwise, accusing the VC of flouting every rules in the rulebook.

The demands put forth by JAC included — Immediate removal of illegal appointed technical officer/senior consultant, immediate appointment of statutory officers and university engineer, deteriorating condition of the university health centre, relieving of teaching and technical staffs from ministerial duties, upload back the NHEU Act, statutes and ordinance in the NEHU official website, holding of regular convocation marking system inclusion of elected members of NEHUSU as representative in AC, review of Educationally Backward Area quota from block level to village level.

The services that are exempted from this strike included — essential services like bus service, water, electricity, health centre, section involved in recruitment process and pension cell for receiving life certificate of pensioners.

The JAC will also be writing to the President of India and Governor of Meghalaya, apprising them of the alleged wrongdoings of the VC.
