SHILLONG: In response to a sharp rise in motorcycle and scooter thefts—suspected to be linked to cross-border smuggling into Bangladesh—law enforcement authorities in East Khasi Hills have intensified night patrolling and surveillance across Shillong.

Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, Vivek Syiem, stated that the police have adopted a multi-layered strategy to curb the growing menace and maintain law and order in the city.

The enhanced security measures include increased foot patrols, frequent mobile patrolling by police vehicles, and the establishment of strategic checkpoints, commonly known as “Nakas,” at key transit points across Shillong, particularly during night hours.

According to the SP, special Nakas and dedicated surveillance teams have been deployed to specifically counter the spike in two-wheeler thefts, which are reportedly being trafficked across the international border into Bangladesh.

In a significant tactical move, the police have also introduced a specialised supervisory role termed the “Night Hunter.” The officer assigned to this role is responsible for monitoring patrol operations across the city, assessing the performance of various police stations, and ensuring seamless coordination of night security measures.

Officials said that the strengthened security framework—ranging from on-ground patrols to intelligence-driven surveillance—is aimed not only at preventing theft but also at dismantling organised networks involved in the illegal movement of stolen vehicles.

The deployment of the “Night Hunter” marks a proactive shift in policing strategy, reflecting the department’s efforts to stay ahead of increasingly organised and sophisticated criminal operations.
