The police have urged the general public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities immediately

SHILLONG: The North Garo Hills District Police successfully foiled a kidnapping attempt on a businessman on the evening of April 25, 2026, leading to the arrest of three individuals, including a leader of the United Garo People’s Forum.

The operation was launched following a timely tip-off received from the public in the Bolsong area around 3:00 PM, reporting that a businessman had been forcibly taken away in a Maruti Ertiga bearing registration number ML-08-K-5869.

Responding swiftly to the information, personnel from the Bajengdoba Police Station set up a strategic ambush at Mansinggre. At approximately 3:30 PM, the police intercepted the suspect vehicle along with the victim’s motorcycle, which was being ridden by one of the gang members. Upon searching the car, officers discovered the businessman confined inside and rescued him immediately.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the three miscreants had intercepted the businessman on the Bolsong–Agia road using the Ertiga.

The perpetrators forcibly seized his motorcycle keys and mobile phone, and demanded his trading license. Before forcing him into the vehicle, the gang also robbed him of ₹30,000 in cash. During the ordeal, the victim’s cries for help alerted local residents, who promptly informed the authorities.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Tenggra Ch. Marak (36), also known as Togan, a resident of Durabanda Chambugong, South Garo Hills; Dipon D. Sangma (38) from Dobakkol, Tura, West Garo Hills; and Lovingson R. Marak (33) from Lower Dobasipara, Tura, West Garo Hills. During interrogation, Tenggra Ch. Marak claimed to be associated with an NGO named the United Garo People’s Forum.

Following the arrests, the Bajengdoba Police Station registered Case No. 03/2026 under sections 126(2), 127(2), 135, 140(3), 304(2), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The North Garo Hills Police department has strongly condemned such criminal activities, particularly when carried out under the guise of NGOs, and warned that no leniency will be shown to those committing crimes for personal gain.

The police have further urged the general public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities immediately to ensure swift and decisive action against criminals.
