Shillong, Dec 1: North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum has dismissed ongoing speculation about his move to the National People’s Party (NPP) or the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), calling such rumours baseless.
Speaking to reporters, Nongrum said political speculation around him is not new, recalling similar rumours that circulated when former KHNAM president Paul Lyngdoh exited the party. He reiterated that there is no truth to the claims and said he prefers to “let time decide everything,” expressing confidence that the right political direction will become clear when needed.
Nongrum, suspended by the Voice of the People Party (VPP) in March last year, insisted he was still a “full-fledged member” of the party. He revealed that he had considered approaching the court two months ago to challenge what he termed his “illegal suspension,” questioning why the party leadership acted without giving him an opportunity to defend himself.
He said the suspension lacked transparency and due process, adding that he has not accepted the party’s decision. According to Nongrum, even the Assembly Speaker has clarified that he remains a full member of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
When asked whether he plans to challenge the suspension legally, Nongrum said he is still examining the option.
The VPP had suspended Nongrum for three years on March 28 last year for alleged anti-party activities.
