SHILLONG: North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum has challenged the Meghalaya Government’s use of the State Reservation Policy for allocating state quota seats in higher education courses, calling it a constitutional anomaly.
In a representation to Chief Secretary Dr. Shakil P. Ahammed, Nongrum pointed out that Meghalaya receives central pool quota seats for MBBS, paramedical, engineering, and other professional courses outside the state.
He alleged that selection of candidates for these seats is based on the categories and percentages set by the Meghalaya State Reservation Policy, which was originally designed for employment.

Nongrum questioned the extension of the policy to educational admissions in the absence of a separate reservation framework for higher education.
He has requested a written clarification from the government within 30 days on the constitutional grounds for such application.
Nongrum warned that if the government fails to respond satisfactorily, he will seek constitutional remedies.
