SHILLONG: National People’s Party (NPP) Spokesperson HM Shangpliang has asserted that the extensive development works carried out by the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government will play a pivotal role in securing a victory for the party’s candidate, Dr. DRL Nonglait.
Speaking to media persons, Shangpliang highlighted that the NPP has been leading the state for the past eight years, during which the government has successfully implemented numerous developmental projects encompassing roads, economic livelihood opportunities, and school infrastructure.
In addition to these structural developments, the spokesperson noted that the government has significantly empowered women, youth, and farmers by introducing various welfare schemes that have directly benefited citizens. Shangpliang expressed strong optimism that these impactful government initiatives will speak for themselves, encouraging beneficiaries to come forward and support the NPP candidate.
Addressing long-pending issues such as the inter-state border dispute and the demand for inclusion of the Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, Shangpliang reminded the public of recent successes. He pointed out that through the persistent efforts of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, the Khasi language was recently included in the CBSE curriculum, which stands as a major milestone.
Consequently, the party believes that the NPP candidate, backed by the state government’s platform and support, will be highly motivated to aggressively pursue these pending Delhi-centric matters in Parliament.
Commenting on the multi-cornered contest, Shangpliang stated that the competition in this bye-election is not limited to any single opponent or party but involves all contesting candidates. He maintained that the NPP respects every rival in the fray, as the core purpose of entering the contest is to achieve victory.
According to the spokesperson, preparations for the Lok Sabha bye-election are progressing rapidly. He reported observing overwhelming public support during campaign trails, which has intensified ever since the NPP officially announced Dr. DRL Nonglait as its candidate on May 7.
Shangpliang revealed that over the last two weeks of intensive campaigning across the Khasi, Jaintia, and Ri-Bhoi regions, the public has openly demonstrated deep trust in the NPP.
He noted that the candidate himself is gaining immense traction due to his high educational qualifications and proven capability, particularly highlighting Dr. Nonglait’s past leadership as the former president of the Khasi Authors Society, where he successfully influenced the government to declare Khasi as an official language.
The NPP spokesperson stated that the party will continue to aggressively push forward with its election campaign. He expressed firm confidence that citizens will turn up in large numbers to listen to the candidate’s vision regarding the crucial state matters that the NPP intends to champion in Parliament upon winning the seat.
