SHILLONG: Titostarwell Chyne, former Chief Executive Member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council and current UDP General Secretary and Sohra MDC, has urged the Meghalaya government to expedite the upgrade of the Umtyngar-Shella road to State Highway status.
Chyne emphasized that this proposal, first championed by former Chief Minister Dr. Donkupar Roy, remains a longstanding demand of the region’s residents.
He highlighted the strategic and economic value of the route, which serves as a key corridor for VIPs, tourists, and locals traveling between Shillong, Umtyngar, and Sohra.

Upgrading the road to highway standards, Chyne argued, would not only improve travel conditions and boost tourism infrastructure in the Sohra belt but also help alleviate congestion and reduce travel time to Sohra by 10 to 15 minutes.
He called on the state government to fast-track the project and fulfill the aspirations of the local electorate.
