SHILLONG: The Nongthymmai community is in mourning following the tragic death of a 12-year-old boy on the night of July 19, an incident that has sparked an outpouring of grief and outrage across social media.
A widely circulated social media post expressed deep anguish over the event, describing it as “sickening.” The post noted that while many were celebrating the FIFA World Cup Final, a tragedy was unfolding locally.
It claimed the boy left a note to his mother, stating he had been bullied at school and could no longer bear it.

The author condemned bullying as a destructive force, urging parents, teachers, schools, and society to take such issues seriously and create safer environments for children. The post extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
Responding to the situation and the online rumors, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem clarified the official position: “We have registered an unnatural death case regarding the tragic suicide of a 12-year-old in Nongthymmai on the night of July 19. While social media posts claim a suicide note mentions school bullying, nothing of that nature has been found so far, but we are actively inquiring into the matter.”
Police authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the boy’s death and have urged the public to remain patient as the inquiry proceeds.
