SHILLONG: Shillong City Police have launched a full-scale investigation into the assault on the Registrar of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Prof. K. C. Biswal, who was allegedly attacked by masked individuals earlier this week.
According to Superintendent of Police (City) D. Pandey, the attack was carried out by a group of three to five masked men.
The incident reportedly occurred on the evening of March 3, when the Registrar was travelling towards Guwahati. While passing through the Mawlai Bypass near ISBT Mawiong, the vehicle he was travelling in was intercepted by the assailants.
“We suspect that three to five masked men first pelted the vehicle with stones and then physically assaulted the Registrar,” SP Pandey said while speaking to reporters.
Police confirmed that although Biswal did not suffer life-threatening injuries, he sustained wounds and is currently under medical observation at North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS).
Following a First Information Report (FIR) filed by the Registrar, authorities have formally registered a case and launched efforts to trace those responsible for the attack.

Investigation Underway
Police teams have begun collecting and reviewing CCTV footage from residential buildings and commercial establishments along the Mawlai Bypass to track the movement and possible escape route of the attackers.
Officials stated that the investigation has reached a crucial stage, and efforts are underway to identify the masked individuals involved in the ambush.
The incident comes amid heightened administrative tensions within NEHU. While police are focusing on the criminal investigation into the assault, the timing and circumstances of the attack—occurring while the Registrar was travelling towards Guwahati—have raised concerns within the university community.
Further developments in the case are awaited.
