SHILLONG: Opposition Leader and former Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma unleashed a flurry of explosive remarks, firmly shutting the door on a return to the Congress and issuing a bold challenge to his own brother, Zenith Sangma, who recently rejoined the party.
The Congress Chapter is Closed!
Dr. Mukul Sangma made it unequivocally clear that his future lies outside the Congress, stating that the “interest of the people in the state supersedes everything else”, overriding any party’s political gain.
He described his exit as a “very conscious decision,” not a spontaneous jump, emphasizing that he has a “scripted chart of paths already scripted for the state of Meghalaya.”
The seasoned leader revealed that his departure was fueled by deep-seated internal conflicts within the Congress, which he hinted at by referencing historical issues in Karnataka and Meghalaya. He stressed.
“These are things which we have kept close to our chest and have responsibly ensured that these things don’t go outside the four walls.” His commitment now, he declared, is a “binding responsibility to see that the state… is somehow protected from all perspective.”
Brother vs. Brother
In a stunning political development concerning his brother, Zenith Sangma, rejoining the Congress, Dr. Sangma was highly guarded yet forceful. While maintaining that “family remains family” regardless of party affiliation, he drew a clear line between personal ties and public duty.
The former CM asserted that once he entered public life, his allegiance expanded to “hundreds of thousands of brothers and hundreds of thousands of sisters,” moving beyond the confines of his immediate family.
He defended his political integrity, challenging anyone to inspect his record in Ampati and Garo Hills to see if he engaged in favouritism to enrich his relatives.
“More than the silver and the gold, I think the name and fame is worthier as higher value,” he stated.
In a dramatic prediction that will send shockwaves through the political arena, Dr. Mukul Sangma challenged his brother’s move.
“Zenith will have, and I think it is an inspirational move, you might have thought his aspirations will be fulfilled if he shifts, but he may be wrong, I am telling you, he may be wrong, and he will be wrong, I will prove it”.
