SHILLONG: In a major development in the high-profile murder of Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, the East Khasi Hills Police have filed a Final Report, leading to the release of two suspects earlier arrested for alleged destruction of evidence.
Superintendent of Police (East Khasi Hills), Vivek Syiem, confirmed that Balbir Ahirbar alias Ballu and Lokendra Singh Tomar have been released after investigators found no material evidence linking them to the crime.
“The Final Report clearly establishes that these two individuals were not involved,” SP Syiem stated. “While circumstances during the initial phase of the investigation led to their arrest, a detailed and scientific probe revealed that only one person was responsible for tampering with evidence.”
Inside the 790-Page Chargesheet
Police have submitted an extensive 790-page chargesheet before the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Sohra Sub-Division, detailing a chilling conspiracy behind the murder.
Those named in the chargesheet include:
Sonam Raghuvanshi – wife of the victim and the alleged mastermind (prime accused)
Raj Kushwaha – alleged associate
Vishal Singh Chauhan, Akash Rajput, and Anand Kurmi – the three alleged contract killers
Raja Raghuvanshi was brutally murdered in May last year while on a visit to the popular tourist destination of Sohra (Cherrapunjee). Given the seriousness of the crime and public interest involved, the case has been transferred to a Fast Track Court to ensure expeditious proceedings.
The court has rejected bail for the prime accused, Sonam Raghuvanshi. No bail applications have been filed so far by the remaining co-accused.
With the filing of the supplementary chargesheet, the stage is now set for a closely watched trial that has drawn attention across Meghalaya and Madhya Pradesh, marking a critical step toward justice in one of the region’s most sensational murder cases.
