SHILLONG: The political atmosphere over the Reservation policy in Meghalaya is reaching a dramatic point.
While the Voice of the People’s Party (VPP) is sounding the war drums, the United Democratic Party (UDP) has decided to take a drastically different path regarding the highly anticipated Expert Committee Report on the State Reservation Policy (SRP).
In a move that has sent ripples through the political corridors of Shillong, UDP General Secretary Titosstarwell Chyne announced today that his party will not pressure the government to rush the release of the massive report.
This strategic “wait-and-see” approach from the UDP comes as a direct counter-narrative to the ultimatum issued by VPP President and Nongkrem MLA, Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit.
The VPP Chief has threatened a state-wide agitation if the government continues to sit on the findings.
While Chyne insists that after waiting this long, it is only logical to let the process conclude properly.
“We have submitted our suggestions, and since the government has formed a committee, we expect that committee to deliver its report in due time,” Chyne told reporters.
Addressing the public’s impatience, the UDP leader backed the Chief Minister’s recent explanation. The report is no light reading—it is a mammoth document spanning 4,000 to 5,000 pages.
When asked about the VPP’s aggressive demands, Chyne remained unfazed. “It doesn’t matter. We have waited this long; we can wait for the government to release it at the right time,” he stated firmly.
He emphasized that it would be “incorrect” for the UDP to demand a premature release while the government is still fine-tuning the details. By giving the state “breathing room,” the UDP is positioning itself as the voice of reason in what is fast becoming the biggest political showdown of 2025.
As the VPP sharpens its tools for a potential protest and the UDP holds its ground, all eyes are now on the Chief Minister. Will the government bow to the threat of agitation, or will it take its time to polish the 5,000-page document?
