Sangma Defends NPP Expansion: Stability Over Politics

SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has strongly defended his administration’s political positioning, dismissing allegations from the opposition Congress that the National People’s Party (NPP) is intentionally dismantling its coalition partners.

Addressing the media on recent political realignments that saw several legislators from regional outfits join the ruling camp, Sangma maintained that the transitions were entirely voluntary.

He explained that individual MLAs chose to align with the NPP and its leadership of their own accord to reinforce both the party and the government machinery, aiming to secure long-term administrative continuity for the remainder of the term and look ahead to the 2028 assembly elections.

Reassuring citizens and coalition members, the Chief Minister emphasized that political stability remains the absolute cornerstone of good governance, enabling the state to enforce firm policies and prioritize public welfare above all else.

The developments follow a major political shift in the state that also led to United Democratic Party (UDP) president Metbah Lyngdoh stepping down as Power Minister.

Addressing queries regarding Lyngdoh’s exit, Sangma clarified that governance frequently necessitates difficult choices, but stressed that the UDP chief resigned entirely on his own accord without any pressure from the ruling administration.

Noting that Lyngdoh took the moral call after 11 of the party’s 12 MLAs parted ways to merge with ruling constituents, the Chief Minister confirmed that he accepted the resignation after reviewing the complex numerical dynamics.
