SHILLONG: Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament, Dr. W.R. Kharlukhi, today, emphasized that schemes and developmental initiatives provided by elected representatives should not be seen as acts of generosity, but rather as their fundamental duty and obligation.

He reminded the public that these representatives are elected by the people and are, therefore, accountable to serve their constituencies responsibly.

Dr. Kharlukhi made these remarks while inaugurating a newly constructed classroom at the College of Teacher Education (PGT), Shillong. The classroom, financed under the MPLAD Scheme for the year 2024–2025, represents a vital enhancement to the College’s infrastructure and is expected to significantly contribute to the academic environment for future educators.

A formal inaugural programme was organized on the college premises, attended by faculty members, student-teachers, members of the Governing Body, and invited guests. The project was made possible through the efforts of Dr. Kharlukhi, whose intervention facilitated the sanctioning of the required MPLAD funds.

Dr. Kharlukhi unveiled a commemorative plaque before officially opening the new classroom. Among the dignitaries present were W.L. Lyngdoh, President of the Governing Body; Dr. Bahunlang Tron, Principal of the College; faculty members; and student-teachers.

In her welcome address, Dr. B. Tron described the classroom as a critical addition that will enable the College to better meet the growing academic needs of teacher education. She reaffirmed the College’s dedication to transforming into a multidisciplinary institution in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. She acknowledged the ongoing challenges in implementing structural academic reforms and called for sustained collaboration between the government and other stakeholders.

Echoing similar views, W.L. Lyngdoh underscored the importance of adopting a multidisciplinary approach as outlined in NEP 2020. He stressed the need for a strong partnership between public representatives and academic institutions to foster sustainable educational progress in the state.
During his speech, Dr. Kharlukhi commended the College for its steadfast commitment to producing skilled educators who contribute positively to society. He reiterated that resources extended through the MPLAD Scheme are not favors, but entitlements of the people that elected representatives are duty-bound to fulfil. He also encouraged the College administration to seek further support from the Chief Minister to strengthen infrastructure and expand academic offerings in line with evolving educational priorities.
