SHILLONG: The Employees of the Mawmluh Cherra Cements Limited (MCCL), under the banner of the Mawmluh Cherra Cements Employees Union (MCCEU), urged the state Government to release the pending third installment.
MCCEU President, Pynskhem Lyngdoh, said that during a meeting held on April 9, the Chief Minister had assured the Union that the matter would be expedited. He also urged the legislators representing Sohra and Shella constituencies to take the issue up with seriousness.
Highlighting the urgency, Lyngdoh stated that nearly 99 percent of the employees have already begun rebuilding their livelihoods using the first two installments. Many have ventured into small-scale enterprises such as homestays, restaurants, shops, and other businesses. The timely release of the third installment, he said, would provide a crucial boost, helping generate employment and strengthen the local economy.
The Union also appealed to the government to release pending dues for retired workers, enabling them to move forward financially.
Lyngdoh further cautioned that while the Union has so far maintained restraint, it may not be able to hold back workers from resorting to protests if there is no positive response. He noted that repeated discussions without tangible outcomes could compel the Union to intensify its efforts to pressure the government.
Echoing similar concerns, another employee pointed to the hardships caused by the delay, stating that the funds are vital for sustaining families and ongoing livelihood activities.
The Union is expected to convene a general meeting soon to deliberate on the next course of action. While it prefers to avoid agitation, it warned that continued inaction could leave workers with no option but to take to the streets to demand their rightful dues.
