Shillong Police Crack Down on Prostitution Near Religious Sites, 16 Apprehended in Coordinated Raid

A total of 16 individuals were apprehended for engaging in activities indicative of prostitution and other immoral practices

SHILLONG: Acting on multiple complaints from concerned citizens and local stakeholders, Shillong Police conducted a coordinated operation on March 28, 2026, targeting areas reportedly being used for prostitution activities in close proximity to religious institutions. The operation also comes amid growing concerns over a rise in HIV cases in the city.

The raids were carried out at key locations including the stretch from Khyndai Lad (Pegasus Hotel) to the Presbyterian English Service Church opposite SBI Main Branch, near the MBOSE office at Lachumiere, and IGP Point.

The police team was led by Ivan Diengdoh, Addl. SP (Ops), and assisted by Joyti Wahlang, DySP WCC, along with the Officers-in-Charge of Sadar Police Station, Women Police Station, and Laitumkhrah Police Station, supported by personnel from East Khasi Hills district.

During the operation, a total of 16 individuals were apprehended for engaging in activities indicative of prostitution and other immoral practices. Among them, four individuals were identified as pimps or agents involved in facilitating and procuring persons for prostitution, indicating organized involvement in such offenses.

Authorities also seized one Swift Dzire car and two scooties allegedly used in the commission of these activities.

A case has been registered under Sadar Police Station Case No. 119(03)2026 under Sections 4, 5, 7, and 8 of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act (ITPA), read with Section 110 of the Meghalaya Police Act.

Further investigation is currently underway.
