SHILLONG: In a significant move towards urban modernization and city beautification, the Meghalaya government has relocated street vendors to newly established commercial zones at Barik and Dhanketi.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma distributed ₹20,000 one-time relocation grants to affected vendors at a program attended by Arts and Culture Minister Sanbor Shullai, East Shillong MLA Dr. M. Ampareen Lyngdoh, and senior Urban Affairs officials.
The initiative balances infrastructure development with the economic survival of local traders.
Chief Minister Sangma acknowledged the complexity of the relocation, highlighting the need to align urban aesthetics with the livelihoods of small business owners.

By designating prime public spaces for vending, the government aims to keep roads and footpaths clear while ensuring vendors retain access to customers.
Vendors receive immediate ₹10,000 Direct Benefit Transfers, followed by ₹2,000 monthly installments for five months.
The Urban Affairs Department has announced plans to enhance these vending hubs with public toilets, seating areas, decorative lighting, and live evening music, encouraging residents and tourists to frequent the upgraded spaces.
The effort is part of a broader strategy to integrate informal trade into Shillong’s modern civic landscape.
