SHILLONG: In a significant push toward digital transformation, the Government of Meghalaya has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with SpaceX’s Starlink India to enhance connectivity across the state, particularly in remote and underserved regions.
The agreement was witnessed by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma during a virtual ceremony, alongside senior officials including Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui and Additional Chief Secretary Sampath Kumar.
The collaboration aligns with Meghalaya’s ambitious vision of building a $10 billion economy by 2028, with digital connectivity positioned as a key driver of inclusive growth and governance.
Highlighting the state’s development priorities, the Chief Minister noted that despite ongoing efforts to expand optical fibre networks, last-mile connectivity remains a major challenge due to Meghalaya’s difficult terrain. He expressed confidence that satellite-based internet solutions will bridge this gap and accelerate service delivery across sectors.
“This initiative can transform lives—whether by improving healthcare access, enhancing education, or boosting farmers’ incomes,” Sangma said, underlining the urgency of early implementation.
Officials from SpaceX, including President and COO Gwynne Shotwell, reaffirmed their commitment to connecting underserved communities and enabling equitable growth through reliable high-speed internet.
The partnership is expected to unlock new opportunities in education, healthcare, disaster management, governance, and rural entrepreneurship, while also strengthening Meghalaya’s vision of positioning Shillong as a regional IT and innovation hub.
Given the state’s hilly terrain and scattered population, satellite internet is seen as a practical alternative to conventional infrastructure, promising faster and more efficient connectivity expansion.
