SHILLONG: Meghalaya mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished administrators, Rebecca V. Suchiang, who passed away on Tuesday after a courageous two-year battle with cancer.
A 1989-batch Indian Administrative Service officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, Suchiang made history on September 30, 2021, when she became the first tribal and Khasi woman to serve as Chief Secretary of the state.
During her tenure and throughout her illness, Suchiang was known for her unwavering commitment to governance and public service, breaking barriers and inspiring colleagues across the administration.
News of her passing prompted widespread grief and heartfelt tributes from leaders and citizens alike.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma led the state in honoring her life and legacy, recalling her decisive leadership and the inspiring example she set.

“Grieved by the passing of former Chief Secretary of Meghalaya, Kong Rebecca V. Suchiang,” the Chief Minister stated.
“As the first indigenous woman Chief Secretary, Kong Rebecca made bold decisions at tough times and was respected for her leadership among her peers, her guidance to her juniors, and her inspiring work ethics.”
He further praised her remarkable fortitude during her long health struggle, emphasizing that her dedication and service will remain an enduring part of Meghalaya’s administrative legacy.
The Chief Minister extended his deepest sympathies to her family and loved ones as the state remembers her decades of exemplary public service.
