SHILLONG: During a meeting with leaders of the Green-Tech Foundation to discuss the opposition against development at Lumpongdeng, the Director of the State Tourism Department, B.L. Pakyntien, stated clearly that the question of withdrawing a project does not arise because there are no projects intended for construction on the island.
The Director expressed deep concern over the current situation at Lumpongdeng and made an earnest appeal to the protesting groups to immediately suspend their hunger strike.
Speaking to media persons, Pakyntien clarified that the government’s goal is identical to that of the protesters: to preserve and protect the environment and the natural beauty of the island without causing any destruction.
The Director assured that the government has no intention of building any permanent structures, such as houses or shops, at Lumpongdeng.
She emphasized that the objective is to allow tourists to enjoy nature in its pristine and original state. “The points demanded by the groups align with our goals, which are to promote the area without altering the natural landscape,” she stated.
In response to the demand to withdraw projects from Lumpongdeng, the Director expressed surprise, noting that the question of withdrawal is irrelevant since no project is currently underway at the site. “Lumpongdeng remains exactly as it is; there is no construction. Therefore, what is there to withdraw when there is no project at all?” she questioned.
She further explained that the government only intends to introduce ‘experiential tourism,’ a method that allows visitors to experience nature directly, and even this would be carefully monitored by the government periodically.
Highlighting the humanitarian aspect of the situation, the Director urged the protesters to withdraw their hunger strike, as it involves human lives. She stated that the government is always open to discussion.
“We welcome suggestions, consultations, and dialogue. There is no issue with expressing opposition, but we urge that it should not reach a point where it affects the physical health or the lives of the members involved,” Pakyntien appealed.
The Director concluded by stating that the government remains open to any further talks to clear up misunderstandings, ensuring that the environment is protected as intended by both parties.
