SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) today announced the results of the Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) Examination 2026 for the Arts, Science, and Commerce streams, reflecting an impressive performance by the state’s students.

This year, a total of 23,559 candidates appeared for the examination, out of which 20,882 successfully passed. This brings the overall pass percentage to 88.63%, marking a significant improvement compared to the 2025 figure of 82.05%. Notably, female students outperformed their male counterparts, recording a pass rate of 92.73% against 90.03% for boys.

In the Arts stream, Meghashree Roy of St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School, Shillong, secured the first position with a total of 457 marks. In the Science stream, D Shro M Marak from Don Bosco College, Tura, emerged as the topper with 472 marks, while in the Commerce stream, Priya Ghosh of St. Edmund’s Higher Secondary School claimed the top spot with 458 marks.

Regarding district-wise performance, East Khasi Hills and Eastern West Khasi Hills showed exceptional results with a pass percentage of 96.20%, followed by West Khasi Hills at 94.94%, West Jaintia Hills at 92.98%, and Ri Bhoi at 92.38%. Students from the Scheduled Tribe category also performed remarkably well, with 19,821 candidates clearing the examination.

Priya Ghosh, the Commerce topper, emphasized that a strong foundation starting from Class XI is essential for success. She credited her achievement to her elder brother, Suman Das, who has been preparing her since Class IV, and her school Principal, Felix, whom she described as a father figure and a source of inspiration.

While she utilized social media to enhance her general knowledge, she strictly avoided it during the final two months of preparation to maintain focus on her studies. Similarly, Arts topper Meghashree Roy expressed surprise and joy at her result, advising students to focus on school-prescribed textbooks rather than external reference materials. She plans to pursue Political Science and aims to appear for the UPSC Civil Service examinations in the future.

Joziah Daman Laloo of St. Anthony’s Higher Secondary School, who secured the second position in the Arts stream with 455 marks, explained that study habits should be tailored to an individual’s physical and mental capacity rather than forced cramming.

An aspiring Professor of English Literature, Joziah noted that he studied only when he felt mentally prepared and took necessary breaks to keep his mind fresh. Meanwhile, Amos Chinminlun, also from St. Anthony’s, who secured the second rank in the Science stream with 464 marks, attributed his success to God’s blessings and the support of good friends.

Amos completed his syllabus by December and utilized modern technology, including Chat-GPT, for in-depth research on his subjects. He cautioned, however, that while technology is beneficial, it requires self-discipline to prevent it from becoming a distraction. These achievers have collectively proven that early preparation and clear goals are the true pathways to honor and success.
